There are just a few old subdivisions in the city limits, and because they were built in the mid-Twentieth century, the plants and trees have grown up around the houses, making the streets feel cool and comfortable. The other houses in town are an eclectic mixture of styles and dates.

Within walking distance are six very good restaurants with prices from six dollars to thirty dollars a plate. Two gas stations, miscellaneous clothing and antique stores. We are working on adding sidewalks but it's easy enough to walk to the post office, the library and the health department clinic.

always feel safe walking

The City picks up yard debris and trash, and keeps the street looking tidy. The cops are nice, and with only being a half dozen of them, you can get to know them. I always feel safe walking even at night. It's a nice place to live, slower and quieter than Athens, easy access to the big box stores.

Watkinsville is a small town with a nice parks, top notch recreation areas, and yearly festivals. It has a home town feel with a top-rated school system.

I live in downtown Watkinsville, a couple of blocks from Rocket Field. Rocket Field is a baseball field, mostly for Little League, a football practice field, the location of the Oconee Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival, a dog park, and a parking area for OCAF events. It gets a lot of use. Lots of people walk the perimeter. We have a lot of walkers and dog walkers and bicycle riders. They are the glue that binds us together. Everyone walking eventually becomes recognizable, and therefore easy to wave to or chat with. It makes the community feel good - to get to know your neighbors if you wish.

the heart of the arts community

OCAF is the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation that occupies three buildings surrounding Rocket Field, all of which have been resurrected by OCAF with some help from other volunteer organizations, most notably the Rotary Club. They have art andwriting classes, bagpipe classes, exceptional art exhibits, a great thrift sale and wine fest, as well as distinctive volunteer base. After twenty plus years, they are at the heart of the arts community.
